• Are legally allowed to treat most species
• Completed 4 years of medical school
• May or may not have exotics experience

• Completed 4 years of medical school
• Demonstrate a special interest in exotic animal medicine but MAY not be a board-certified specialist
• Network with other exotic animal veterinarians for referrals and case help
• Confirm your vet is a member by using the “Find a Vet” tool on association websites

Specialists
• Completed 4 years of medical school
• Completed 3+ years of specialized training such as internships and a residency
• Are generally members of professional associations
• Are recognized through the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners as being experts in their field of knowledge among veterinarians
